ALTERNATE STRATEGIES: 10 SECONDS FOR PEACE - ANIMATION RESEARCH PROJECT

10 SECONDS FOR PEACE - INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION DAY 2025

In solidarity with Russian animator's protesting Putin's attack on Ukraine, in our last three weeks of the semester we will focus our research towards the producing a series of short animations embracing the theme "10 Seconds for Peace". Go hear to read Cartoon Brew Article and watch the animation.

Collectively, we will be submitting these works for the 2025 International Animation Day Reel. You can read the proposal below submitted by the ASIFA, IAD coordinator, Brianna Yarhouse.

Research Steps:

1. Two Weeks of Initial Research: After an initial two weeks of exploration & experimentation, we'll pivot our focus towards completing an 8-11 second piece dedicated to upholding peace in the world.

2. "Ten Seconds for Peace" 6 Panel Pitch: Based on your knowledge of the media you've researched (Research #1. Research #2, or Sand Animation), use the 6 panel pitch process to propose at least two (three is optimal) 10 second ideas. See instructions here for the 6 Panel Pitch. Your final panel must have the word "Peace".

3. Simple Storyreel Edit: You may find the Simple Storyreel Edit a helpful option to nail down your timing BEFORE you begin Final Animation.

4. "10 Seconds for Peace" Final Research Presentation & Screening: Our final exam will be a 5-7 minute Research Presentation and a collective screening of the "10 Seconds for Peace" projects.

Introduction by ASIFA, International Animation Day Coordinator, Brianna Yarhouse

Today, there are over 28 armed conflicts that are occurring across the globe. How do we as an organization respond? When the Association Internationale du Film d'Animation (ASIFA) was chartered in 1960 it was partly in response to a world at war. Provisioned under UNESCO, Peace has been one of the tenets of interchange between animators and our differing cultures. As the UNESCO vision statement states:

"Since wars begin in the minds of men and women, it is in the minds of men and women that peace must be built." (UNESCO)

Inspired by Russian Animators who spoke out against war with Ukraine, we want to promote Peace everywhere. No matter what you believe or how you disagree with one another, violence and killing is not the answer. All creatures have the right to live in peace.

Proposal

Animators from around the world of all ages will be invited to contribute 8-11 second short films on the subject of peace. Short films will be shown through a variety of venues including streaming. A curated collection will be offered for IAD 2025.

Deadline for short films will be Sept 01, 2025.
